Biosafety Cabinet Calibration

INTERNATIONAL NSF BIOSAFETY CABINET CALIBRATION SERVICE

Biosafety Cabinet (BSC) calibration (or certification) is the process of measuring and technically evaluating parameters such as airflow velocity, HEPA filter integrity, and leakage in accordance with international standards NSF 49 or EN 12469. This process helps protect personnel, samples, and the environment from biological hazards, and is typically performed periodically by organizations accredited to ISO/IEC 17025.

Why calibration

Why is Biosafety Cabinet calibration required?

  • Safety assurance: Confirms the cabinet functions properly and helps prevent exposure to biological agents for users and the environment.
  • Sample protection: Ensures a clean working environment and minimizes cross-contamination.
  • Standards compliance: Meets stringent requirements in laboratories, hospitals, and healthcare settings.
  • Performance optimization: Detects potential faults early and helps extend equipment lifespan.

NSF/ANSI 49 STANDARD

NSF/ANSI 49 is considered the U.S. "gold standard" (established by NSF International), specifying design, construction, performance, and field certification requirements for Biosafety Cabinets (BSC), especially Class II cabinets.

KEY CALIBRATION PARAMETERS

The certification process generally follows NSF 49 and includes the following tests:

1

Inflow & Downflow Velocity Test: Measures incoming airflow (personnel protection) and downward airflow (sample protection).

2

HEPA Filter Integrity (Leak Test): Scans the filter to ensure there is no leakage.

3

Smoke Pattern Test: Uses smoke to visualize airflow direction and verify that no turbulent airflow is present.

4

Containment Test: Ensures contaminated air does not escape from the cabinet.

5

Additional parameters: Illumination intensity, UV, noise level, vibration.

WHEN IS CALIBRATION REQUIRED?

  • After first-time installation.
  • After cabinet relocation.
  • After HEPA filter replacement or replacement of critical components.
  • Periodically (typically every 6 months or 12 months depending on usage frequency).
